I've been following the thread on conservatives and the politics of cohousers with interest. I'm guessing that the category cohousers fit in is more cultural than political. In particular I'm thinking of the cultural category Paul Ray and Sherry Anderson dubbed "cultural creatives." Having read their book, I certainly identify as a cultural creative myself! Neither conservative nor exactly liberal, we cultural creatives seek a better alternative, a third way, and are proactive about creating it. We care deeply about ecology, community, peace, and spirituality. Check it out if you're interested: http://www.culturalcreatives.org/ By the way, Ray and Anderson claim cultural creatives are 26% of the population and rising, so I think while cohousing may never fit in the current mainstream (the "modern culture" in Ray and Anderson's lingo), the mainstream may join the cultural creatives in the next few years. As the numbers of cultural creatives grow, I expect ideas like community, consensus, and green technology will not seem marginal anymore.
