Our community, Oak Village Commons in Austin, TX, has tried to specify what are
the
areas in which we want to be "like-minded" (they include desire for community
and a
commitment to green building.) Our process also sorts people naturally
depending on
whether they like our fairly streamlined consensus decision-making process, our
tendency to have a bit of a spiritual flavor to our meetings (singing, etc.),
and
some common ideas about childrearing that are alive in the group (most of our
kids
attend schools at which TV viewing is discouraged for kids under 8).

We have also been specific about some of the areas in which we DON'T want to be
all
alike (they include race, ethnicity, religion, gender, marital status, sexual
orientation, personality type, interests, abilities, affluence, and age). So
far,
with only about 1/3 of our membership, we have a pretty good mix already on
most of
those categories. And even if our cohousing neighborhood doesn't turn out to
have a
lot of diversity in some categories, I'm sure we'll have much more opportunity
to
learn from our differences than we would living in suburbia!

Blessings,

Cat Barron
