Agreed, as long as you use mats for standing on, available from all restaurant supply outfits. As a cook, I cannot stress enough that it is very hard on the feet and legs to stand for long periods on concrete. For short stints, it's not too bad, but for longer periods - ouch. There are many products available to give the concrete some color and even a marble-like pattern--beautiful! At Westwood we have concrete floors everywhere, both ground slab and thin-slab on upper levels because we embedded radiant floor heat in the concrete. We used a stain in our common house and it has worn well. One of our members dyed his home's slab floor rather than installing a topping. The dye colors the cement in the concrete and it really does look like marble. It has a smooth wax finish on top of it for easy cleaning. --Elana Kann, Westwood Cohousing Community in Asheville, NC -----Original Message----- From: Zeke Holland [mailto:zholland [at] blazenetme.net] Sent: Sunday, March 06, 2005 10:52 PM To: cohousing-l [at] cohousing.org Subject: [C-L]_ Kitchen flooring Here at Two Echo Cohousing we're getting close to completing our common house. We're looking for input about kitchen flooring. We thought we would do an epoxy floor (permanent, power washable, with easy-to-clean coves at the walls) over our concrete slab, but this turns out to be too expensive. So now we're considering everything from vinyl tiles to epoxy-alternatives that come with a lower price tag. What have you done in your community, and how do you like it?
