Just to give a little background, anti-union management often ask for a secret
ballot, because this gives them an opportunity to stall the election for months
and years, intimidating workers in the meantime.  Many unions are never able to
get an actual election date, and so lose by default. The National Labor
Relations Board remains packed with anti-labor appointees from the Bush era,
and makes little or no effort to enforce rules regarding fair elections.  A
check card election determines whether the staff want a union there on the
spot, without endless maneuvering to try an set an election date.
