I should add to this that you should make decisions on the basis of 
information. Choosing land automatically opens and closes doors. Now that you 
have it, you can begin looking at the advantages and disadvantages. What is 
possible now? 

All options are not open to you or to new people. A construction person will 
tell  you want can be done on what budget, within zoning ordinances, etc. And 
how to design on a modular basis, for example, which allows changes most easily.
