Cohousing-L Mailing List: HOA/CoHousing Balance

Hi Everyone,

I am a member of Washington Commons CoHousing in West Sacramento, CA.  We
have 3 more units to sell before we officially become an HOA.  I am
wondering how other CoHousing communities balance the legal requirements of
an HOA, (especially in CA), with the non-hierarchical approach most
cohousing members think of when joining a cohousing community.  I believe
most of my community will want to be sure to abide by the CC&Rs and Bylaws,
but only as much as we have to. I am hoping to coordinate a community
discussion in this important issue. Any other thoughts or info on how your
community accomplished this balance, (whether or not you live in
California)?
