Sharon asked about mortgages of a religious based cohousing group. The Seattle Mennonite group formed out of its church. They purchased an existing apartment building and did a small amount of remodeling. All their legal documents are boilerplate LLC documents. Since they are small (8 units?) and the demand is large, any resales just gets announced at church and that seems to handle it just fine. (I don't know what their turnover rate is) They appear to be able to get mortgages just fine because on paper there are no requirements or restrictions on owning, selling or buying one of their units. The selection part, e.g., members from their church, is entirely voluntary on the part of the sellers. Like I said, recruiting members for a religious based cohousing community is going to be the difficult part, since I believe it is illegal to discriminate on housing based on religion. So you can't advertise widely, you have to advertise very selectively, e.g., within a particular church.
