The discussion of gifts raises a larger issue -- living at the level of the lowest common denominator. Given that all human endeavors except fantasy sooner or later come up against reality in the form of tangible objects like cold bodies and high prices, there is the unaddressed issue of quality. What does quality look like? What is the best we can do given our circumstances? Is that basement completion the best way to address our values? Our standard of living? Our sense of community? What are our top 5 values? How do we express or achieve them? It seems very hard in groups not to sink to the lowest common denominator. The best that can be achieved is that with which Everyone agrees. Or which Everyone can afford. Or which Everyone wants to discuss. Unless Everyone wants to discuss an issue until a resolution is achieved, it can't be discussed at all. Those with short attention spans rule the day. There is no such thing is quality. What is quality in a cohousing community?
