On 11/29/03, Tom Hammer (thammer302 [at] yahoo.com) wrote in part, re the changeover from a paper to on-line Cohousing Magazine: Physical magazines can be put on display tables, picked up and re-read, and there is a reality to paperpublications that cannot be matched electronically. Both venues would be better than one or the other.
This is a belated reply to this. I put off writing it until the first issue of
the on-line Cohousing Magazine came out. We need to continue to have easy access to hard copies of the magazine for purposes such as this. This is one of the main ways we spread the word about cohousing. If we lose the ability to do this, IMO it will be a major setback for the cohousing movement. I would like to thank the editors for providing a "printer-friendly" version of the magazine (as an Acrobat file). This addresses one of the concerns I had, which was that we might have a hard time printing it out. Here at work I have access to a color printer, and I printed out the magazine with no problem. However, we need a way to provide hard copies of the magazine to, for example, put on the table to be handed out when a cohousing group sets up a booth at a public event to promote their community or cohousing in general. To provide a stack of hard copies, someone mustnot only have access to a color printer, but be able to tie it up for an hour
or more to do the printing. A lot of people only have access to a color printer at work, and would get into trouble with their employer if they tied up the printer for this long. So, what will need to happen is that a group planning to set up a "booth" will need to see if anyone has access to a color printer. If nobody does, which could easily happen, they will have a hard time getting hard copies to put on the table. There is also the problem that there are a few people who are interested in cohousing who don't have access to email or the Web. Not many, but I would not want us to leave them "out of the loop". I have an idea that would address both problems. Would CohoUS be willing to print out hard copies of the on-line magazine and offer them for sale, for a fee slightly higher than the cost of printing and mailing them?
