I hope that someday (and would that it's not too far a way), my
dearly beloved Cohousing Association will have a simple and almost
automatic way to keep track of the demographics of the population of
those who live in our communities. Wouldn't it be cool if every time
someone is born or passes away, moves in or moves out of a cohousing
community, the community liaison person from that community could go
to our website and adjust the numbers for that community (as well as
updating the numbers of occupied units for communities built in
stages). And the national totals would instantly adjust so anyone
looking at the data could get a instant and current picture of one
aspect of "who lives in cohousing."
Someone made a comment about balance. How about this for a balance to "too many" single older women. Doyle Street Cohousing in Emeryville, CA, a very small community of 12 units on .29 of an acre. has, by very recent count, 13 children (and their parents, of course) living there.
I used to live there, and when the first 8 households moved in, in 1992 we had only one child among us.
