As a prospective cohousing member, I find this discussion critical to my decision-making. I've read many things about cohousing but none has brought home to me the need for freedom of speech and opinion like this discussion about crossing a picket line.

Like all things in life, it isn't a two-sided thing but a multi- faceted issue: money lost to the organization, supporting a fight against injustice, acknowledging the part unions have played in our current lifestyles, adding to increased corporate power, and on and on.

I find that certain of these issues take precedence as a union member. It is important to know the history, to be aware of current labor situations, and to acknowledge the economic shift that occurs when groups of people get together to improve their lives---whether that is with cohousing or in a union.

Cohousing members are a union of sorts, working to find better ways to handle some of life's problems.

I don't have any easy answers --this isn't black and white, yes or no-- just like real life. Good luck with the decision-making. I hope some folks honor the picket line while supporting the National CoHo organization.

And, I know a grand lesson has been learned here by many. The next time you sit back and relax on a Saturday, thank a union member for the weekend.
