In the resent issue of Fine House building there is an article about a developer in Lincoln NE who is building houses for $45 a sg/ft excluding land cost. He did this simply by getting all the subcontractors together, presenting them with the plans and asking how could they build it cheaper. Two thing happened. One was that they worked as a team in exploring cheaper options to obtain the same result. Two, they showed what could be altered on the plan to make their job easier and consequently cheaper. There were other things like use of materials that helped but I dont want to ruin the ending for you. Read it for yourself.
