The question of toxicity in common buildings is timely as our group is about to discuss the 'ifs' and 'wheres' of our common woodworking shop. Matt is quite correct in identifying the many toxic substances in any woodworking shop. I had a quite severe reaction to Cocobolo (Rosewood) dust in my own shop last week (wasn't wearing a dust mask). And there are dozens of woods, as well as most finishing products and glues, that are toxic to some people. Water borne finishes, non urea formeldehyde glues, good masks and efficient dust collection minimize the risks, not to mention personal responsibility and a commitment to safe woodworking practises. Having a seasoned woodworker (preferably with most fingers intact) around would be a great advantage. If not than hire someone to give a course or two.
