I have been following this discussion with interest, especially regarding
mandatory participation. I don't understand why it causes resentment if
some people eat but don't cook. Isn't this the same for landscaping and
other community task that are done by a subgroup for the benefit of all
members? If I am on the landscape committee, the labor I do is for the
enjoyment of the entire community. What is it about the food thing that
gives rise to the resentment?

IMO stipulating that those who want to eat should
cook or clean makes sense. I think I would feel resentful
if some people got to participate without having to
contribute any labor. (This is - unless there are some exceptional
circumstances which I can't think of at the moment).

Another question concerning meals: Are there any communities
who have tried to encourage use of organic stuff?
If so, how much does it add to the cost charged to individuals?

Thanks,

R.
